Sacred Heart Cultural Center: The Landmark That Became Augusta's Stage (Augusta Azalea News)

You can see Sacred Heart before you can name it. The former Catholic church on Greene Street, completed in the early 1900s, rises over downtown Augusta with twin spires, elaborate brickwork and stained-glass windows that stop drivers mid-block. Today it is Sacred Heart Cultural Center, a nonprofit arts and events venue and one of the city's signature landmarks.

The building's second life is the story. As a cultural center, the old sanctuary hosts concerts, exhibitions, festivals, weddings and community events in a space built for ceremony. The acoustics and the architecture do much of the work: performances here feel like occasions before a single note is played.

Sacred Heart is also a anchor for how Augusta treats its historic fabric. The city is full of buildings from its canal, cotton and resort eras, and the center is proof that preservation and daily use can be the same thing — a landmark that earns its keep by hosting the city's calendar rather than sitting behind a rope.

The gardens and grounds extend that role outdoors, giving downtown a green room off Greene Street for receptions and quieter visits. For photographers, the east view across the lawn — the one on this page — is the classic Augusta postcard that is not a golf course.

For newcomers building a mental map of Augusta, Sacred Heart is a good pin to drop early: downtown, historic, active year-round, and a reminder that this city's culture did not begin and does not end with one week in April.
